We're back, baby!
If you’re reading this, thank you for your patience. There’s literally no one better than you 🫶🏾
We needed a month to regroup, and I’m so thankful to you for sticking around and even sharing the newsletter while we were away. It means more than you know.
Today’s issue is just a quick update on where we’ve landed. Regular programming resumes next week.
First, what I have been up to. Apart from staring at a wall thinking about That New News, I have been discovering new music (like Ogi), reconnecting with old faves (like The Strokes), journaling, reading, and finding joy in small things.
On That New News and where we’re headed
We created That New News to make the chaos of Nigerian news easier to digest, with context that makes the news easier to understand.
As promised, there will be no paywall. But we do need a way to keep the lights on, so here’s what we’re trying:
Friends of That New News
This is a voluntary subscription for people who really like what we’re building here and want to be a little closer to it. It’ll cost N5,000/month, and you’ll get:
Automatic priority on the semi-open-source bulletin we’ll start publishing soon (and an invitation to choose what goes in the bulletin)
First look at new content experiments, and a chance to share feedback and help shape what we build (within reason, you’re not my mum)
First to know when an event is happening and first ticket dibs with a discount (This year’s theme: know your roots)
Free merchandise! free hat or mug after month 3 of your sub
Friends of That New News exclusive community
One more perk + back story:
A few years ago, I was writing Work in Progress: an interview series documenting different Nigerian experiences. It covered conversations about growing up poor (upper middle class and losing all the money as a teenager), homelessness, religion, leaving the country, family expectations, and all the strange little things that shape life in Nigeria.
I’m reviving it as a monthly podcast conversation.
It’ll be free for everyone, but Friends of That New News will help shape it. You’ll get to suggest topics, nominate guests, and vote on what we explore each month.
Ok, now, but what bulletin?
Think of it as a community noticeboard: you submit the things you're excited for people to see, and we review and post.
Got a product launch, event, job opening, or something you want more people to see? Every Wednesday evening, we’ll publish a curated list for our 1,160+ subscribers and 800+ weekly readers.
We will start sharing a form in every newsletter from next week, but if you have any questions or already have something you’d like on the board, reply to this email, and we can get to work!
Lastly, tell me how you’ve been? (I really want to know). Leave a comment here or send me an email (isiakatomiwa@gmail.com).
See you next week!

Oh, the other thing keeping me busy: I’ve been writing a business and economy newsletter called Daily Bread. If you’re looking to know more about Nigeria’s business world, I think you’d enjoy it. Go check it out.
Love you like I birthed you 😘
